SUSTAINABILITY

IRIDEX is one of the pioneers of environmental protection related industries in Romania, with over 25 years of experience in the field of environmental protection, municipal waste management, construction and operation of integrated waste management centres. Through what it does, Iridex aims to protect the environment, eliminating the waste of resources - whatever they may be - thus contributing to achieving the European goal of #zero waste# and implementing the principles of the circular economy.

Over more than 25 years of activity, IRIDEX has constantly evolved, adapting to increasingly stringent environmental requirements, becoming an important part of the changing attitude towards the way municipal waste is treated.

We have evolved from being simple municipal waste depositories to gradually becoming key pillars of many companies' sustainability strategies, reliable partners in Romania's efforts to meet its recycling targets.

Today, we are applying the principles of sustainable development in our daily work, in everything we do, for us as a company, for the communities in which we operate and - not least - for each and every member of our team.

By the very nature of the services it provides, the Iridex Group is part of efforts to reduce the amount of waste that is landfilled in the long term, increase recycling and recovery of materials, reduce greenhouse emissions and harmful substances in the air and water, move towards an economy that uses natural resources as efficiently as possible, with low carbon emissions, in a way that benefits nature and - equally - human communities.

Human and community health
Through what we do every day, we take care of the health of people and communities, a huge responsibility that we do with pride and successfully fulfil. Whether it's street cleaning, waste collection and transportation, or operating and managing landfill sites, we strive for excellence. It may not seem to some that 'waste management' is no big deal, but to us it is the most important. We provide comfort and health to people, meeting public health requirements and contractual obligations.
Energy to the max
We are leaders in Romania in the use of landfill gas for electricity generation, being - in fact - the first to understand that since there is energy in the gas produced naturally from waste, it can be captured, filtered and used to produce electricity for consumption by landfill facilities. We simply refuse to burn the gas for nothing. At the same time, in the context of the current energy crisis, we have started building two photovoltaic parks that will soon start producing green energy. The sun's energy is virtually limitless and producing electricity through photovoltaic technologies will revolutionise the way we produce the electricity we need.
Water Care
Against the backdrop of climate change, water has become a major resource. We have built all landfills carefully so that substances resulting from the natural decomposition of waste do not enter the soil and groundwater. Waterproofing of the landfill base and embankments prevents leachate seeping into the soil/subsoil. The leachate is collected through a drainage system and directed to collection tanks and finally to 4 modules for treatment, all using the most efficient but most expensive treatment method, reverse osmosis.
Circulation through recycling
The circular economy involves transforming waste back into raw materials, with a beneficial multiplier effect throughout the cycle, up to extraction, primary and secondary processing. Through the waste sorting station we ensure that inorganic waste, such as PET, plastics, metals and glass, is separated and sent for recycling and reintroduced into the economic cycle. Waste that cannot be recycled but can be recovered for energy is baled and sent to energy-intensive waste, such as cement factories. Organic waste is sent to the mechanical-biological treatment plant for aerobic fermentation, where the resulting material is then used as a coating material. The waste sorting plant is an important step in the efforts to divert as much waste as possible from landfill, to increase the recycling of materials and to realise their full potential.
Sustainability through information and education
We are actively involved in raising awareness of the need to reduce waste generation. We provide, through group entities, technical advice on environmental engineering and compliance assessments, specific services on environmental protection in the packaging industry, assist in the development of working procedures and environmental guidelines. Iridex Group, together with the Polytechnic University of Bucharest and other actors in industries related to environmental protection, is involved in a number of projects related to the promotion of the circular economy.
The success of the company, the success of every person who works for it
We are one team, no matter where we work. We actively promote social inclusion and unequivocally disavow any discriminatory drift. We invest in people and help them reach their professional development potential and achieve their career goals. We are ONE!
